Tips from Instructor Gavin and Gocci from Aruba Active Vacations.
The countdown to Aruba Hi-Winds is on! As one of the biggest and most exciting watersports events in the Caribbean, the long distance kitesurf race is a true test of stamina, skill, and strategy. Whether you’re joining for the first time or are a returning competitor, preparation is key to enjoying the ride and reaching the finish line strong.
Our kitesurfing instructor at Aruba Active Vacations, Gavin and Gocci, have coached countless riders—beginners and pros alike—and is here to share their top tips for getting ready for the challenge.
1. Leg Day Is Every Day: Build Strength and Endurance
Long-distance kiting puts a heavy load on your lower body. While your upper body handles the bar and kite control, it’s your legs that absorb constant impact, maintain body posture, and steer your board—often for over an hour without a break.
Gavin’s tip:
Start training your legs at least 4–6 weeks before the race. Incorporate activities like:
- Running or cycling for cardiovascular endurance
- Squats, lunges, and step-ups for strength
- Balance and core exercises o improve stability
The better your leg endurance, the longer you can hold a strong stance on your board without fatigue creeping in.
2. Simulate the Race: Train the Route (But Never Alone)
One of the best ways to prepare mentally and physically is to replicate the race conditions. A great practice route is from the Fishermen’s Huts to Arashi Beach and back. This stretch offers varying wind angles and small shifts in water texture—perfect for testing your speed, positioning, and stamina.
Important safety note:
Never do a long-distance training run alone. Always bring a fellow rider or inform the kite schools at the Huts before heading out. This ensures someone knows your plan and can raise the alarm in case of any issues. Bring a phone in a waterproof case if possible.
3. Dial in Your Equipment: Every Detail Matters
Long races amplify small problems. What might be a minor inconvenience on a 10-minute session can become a major issue in a 10 km race. Before every training session—and especially on race day—go through your full gear checklist:
- Kite: Check for tears, leaks, or weak spots in the canopy and bladder.
- Lines: Inspect for knots, wear, or stretching. Equal line lengths are essential for control.
- Bar: Test the depower and safety systems. Make sure nothing sticks or slips.
- Harness: Inspect for wear and test the release system.
- Board: Tighten foot strap and fin screws. Check for cracks or damage.
Pro tip from Gocci:
If you’re unsure about anything, stop by Aruba Active Vacations and let one of our instructors take a look. Don’t risk your race on avoidable gear issues.
